Introduction
Traditonal Chinese Medicine and the Shaolin Temple
The Songshan Shaolin Temple is renowned in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a great centre of medical learning. For centuries the Temple and its satellites have acted as medical universities equivalent in status and importance to teaching hospitals in Western Medicine.
Historically in Shaolin Culture medicine has been regarded as its highest gift to the world. The monks of the Temple have for over a fifteen hundred years used their expertise to treat the people and the Shaolin Formulary has deeply influenced the whole of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Having its origins in Buddhism, Shaolin Medicine makes no use of animal products and particularly regards the use of endangered species as against its fundamental principles.
