About Chan Wu Yi
Chan Wu and Yi are the three unique foundations of the Songshan Shaolin Temple and represent the 2000 year old temple’s outstanding and immense influence on World Culture.
禅 Chan is the form of Buddhism originated in the Songshan Shaolin Temple by the Indian monk Bodhidharma in the 6th Century which is now known to the world by its Japanese name ‘Zen’. As an immensely influential philosophy Chan has profoundly shaped the culture of much of Asia, been the foundation and guiding principle of Japanese Bushido and in modern times has entered the Western psyche through the spread of Chinese and Japanese martial arts and innumerable popular books, movies and television shows. Today the Shaolin Temple is once again at the forefront of promoting this great heritage that saw it’s beginnings in a small cave high in the Songshan Mountains.
武 Wu stands for the unique form of Chinese martial arts that originated in the Shaolin Temple which has influenced the development of martial arts throughout the world.
医 Yi is the third and equally important pillar of Shaolin Culture: Medicine. For centuries the monks of the Temple studied the medicinal properties of herbs that grow on the Songshan mountains and in doing so developed a sophisticated and highly effective cannon of medical knowledge. For over a thousand years Shaolin has been renowned as a centre for medical learning. Because of it’s Buddhist origins Shaolin Medicine makes no use of animal derived products and is by its very essence non-destructive to the environment.
Shifu Shi Henglong
Shifu Shi Henglong is a 35th Generation inheritor of this cultural treasure of China. As a former member of the Official Songshan Shaolin Temple Fighting Monk Delegation he has been spreading Shaolin Culture to the world. After visiting over a dozen countries he has chosen the UK to further his mission as an emissary of this ancient tradition.
